the lab

hi, and welcome to the pixel labs of j.neal designs.

me

i'm a creative professional studying web design and interactive media at the art institute of austin. at ai-austin, i've taken imd 131 intro to scripting languages, imd 222 intermediate scripting languages, and imd 233 advanced scripting languages. i'm currently a sophomore working towards a bachelors of art in web design and interactive media.

i moved to austin in 1991, right after high school, to attend the university of texas at austin, where i studied radio, tv, and film. i dropped out of u.t. to pursue a career in the music and entertainment industry.

my back ground is in independent street level music and lifestyle marketing. i've ran regional street marketing campaigns for labels such as kinetic records, moonshine, novamute; the choachella festival; indie films like groove as well as produced multiple dj oriented events during the early 90's to the early aught's.

i am the former dance music consultant to sxsw music conference from 1999 to 2002, where i increased the number of djs and electronica acts exponentially.

i've also worked for a spell with the austin music network, where i produced and hosted the hip-hop/electronica show fly in the late 90's.

as a web designer, i hope to develop websites that are visually pleasing, that tell a story, and are well coded. click on these links to see a couple examples of my work mccutchen hair design, kimchi freak, and my pseudo-hdr photoblog.

this is developmental laboratory for an (x)html, css, client side, and server side scripting framework i am creating for site design, with an eye on rapid development and deployment. it was developed over a 15 hour period, while i was researching a paper on why web developers should create their own framework. it's still a work in progess.

being a lab, this site is meant to be shredded, deconstructed, and reconstructed as the backend develops, and as i explore a variety of design aesthetics; emphasizing on clean coding and modern design techniques.

currently, in the lab, i am exploring the use of white space in design combined with modern web typography.

on the tech end, fonts are rendered using googles @font-face api, it uses css3 text effects, box shadows, with integrated jquery plug-ins for presentation and navigation.
